Orthodontic Appliances
Sophistique fabricates a wide selection of fixed and removable orthodontic appliances designed to support skeletal and dental correction across a range of malocclusions. Built for precision and patient comfort, our appliances are custom-fabricated to the clinician’s prescription, ensuring reliable force delivery, consistent results, and compatibility with the treatment timeline.
Hyrax
A rapid palatal expander that widens the upper jaw by applying controlled pressure to the palatal bones, creating space for improved dental alignment and enhanced airway function.
Commonly indicated in cases of maxillary constriction and posterior crossbite, it is one of the most effective appliances for skeletal expansion in growing patients. Treatment is typically monitored closely to ensure gradual, controlled sutural opening.
Quadhelix
A fixed orthodontic appliance incorporating four helices, designed to expand the upper arch, address dental crowding, and posterior crossbite, and is particularly effective in growing patients. Its multi-helix design allows for three-dimensional force delivery, including expansion, rotation, and tipping control of the posterior teeth.
The appliance is fully adjustable, allowing the clinician to customize the treatment force to each patient’s specific needs.
Hawley Retainer
The Hawley retainer is one of the most widely used removable orthodontic retainers, consisting of an acrylic palatal plate and a stainless steel labial bow that rests against the anterior teeth. Designed to maintain tooth positions following active orthodontic treatment, it allows for minor adjustments and offers excellent long-term stability. Its durable, repairable construction and practical and time-tested design make it a preferred choice for post-treatment retention in both adolescent and adult patients.
Tongue Crib
An intraoral appliance designed to retrain tongue posture and eliminate harmful tongue thrust habits that may adversely affect the alignment of the anterior teeth. By creating a physical barrier, it discourages the tongue from resting or pushing against the front teeth, helping to normalize swallowing patterns and oral muscle function. Early intervention with a tongue crib can prevent the development of open bite tendencies and reduce the need for more complex orthodontic correction later.
Lingual Arch
A fixed appliance positioned on the lingual surface of the lower teeth, used to maintain or guide lower molar positioning and prevent unwanted tooth movement during orthodontic treatment. It serves as a reliable space maintainer following premature loss of primary teeth, preserving arch length for erupting permanent dentition. The lingual arch can also be used as an anchorage device to support more complex tooth movements within the lower arch.
TPA (Transpalatal Arch)
A fixed appliance that maintains upper arch width, controls molar rotation, and stabilizes the upper teeth. It is commonly used during active orthodontic treatment or following extractions. By connecting the upper first molars across the palate, the TPA provides a passive yet effective means of anchorage reinforcement, reducing unwanted molar movement during space closure or retraction mechanics. It can also be activated to deliver rotational or torque corrections to the molars when required.
Thumb Crib
A fixed appliance used to help patients discontinue thumb sucking, preventing the dental and skeletal malalignment that can result from prolonged digit pressure during jaw development. The appliance discourages the habit by eliminating the suction and comfort associated with thumb placement, making continued sucking uncomfortable and less rewarding. Timely use of a thumb crib can help avoid anterior open bite, increased overjet, and narrow arch development in young patients.
Twin Block
The Twin Block appliance is a removable functional appliance system designed to correct Class II skeletal discrepancies by redirecting mandibular growth through the use of complementary upper and lower acrylic blocks with interlocking bite planes. The occlusal coverage of these blocks holds the mandible in a forward, postured position, stimulating condylar adaptation and encouraging favourable jaw development. Widely regarded as one of the most effective functional appliances for growing patients, the Twin Block is well-tolerated, easy to wear, and produces measurable improvements in both skeletal and dental relationships over the course of treatment.
